Learn HTML5 From Scratch Course guide
Learn HTML5 From Scratch: Free Beginner Course Guide
Learn HTML5 from scratch, free: tools, your first HTML document, tags and attributes, page structure, head and body, links, semantic tags, lists and tables.

Learn HTML5 From Scratch is a free beginner course that teaches you to write web pages in HTML5, starting from what HTML is and the tools you need. It is for absolute beginners who have never written a line of code, as well as anyone who wants a quick, structured refresher on HTML basics.
In about 1.7 hours of video, you go from an empty file to pages with a proper head, a well-built body, hyperlinks, semantic tags, lists and tables. Everything is on the HTML5 course page, and the videos are free on YouTube.
Who this course is for
The course is labelled Beginner. It is a good fit if you are:
- A student or career changer taking your first step into web development.
- A designer, marketer or content writer who edits web pages and wants to understand the markup underneath.
- A developer from another field (data, testing, back end) who needs solid HTML basics.
- Someone planning to learn CSS and JavaScript next, and who wants the foundation right first.
No previous coding experience is needed. You only need a computer and the willingness to type along.
What you will learn
The 11 videos group into five themes.
1. What HTML is and how to start. What Is HTML explains the role of HTML on the web, and Tools Required To Write HTML Code shows what you need on your machine. Then Create Your First HTML Document gets you to a working page quickly, which is the best way to build confidence.
2. The language itself. HTML Tags Elements Attributes teaches the three words you will use every day. Once you understand how a tag, an element and an attribute differ, every other lesson becomes easier to follow.
3. Page structure. Master HTML Page Structure shows the skeleton every page shares. HTML Head Section Internals (11 minutes) goes inside the head section, the part of the page visitors do not see but browsers and search engines read.
4. Content and links. Create Engaging Content in HTML Body is one of the longest lessons at 21 minutes and covers building the visible content of the page. Managing Hyperlinks in HTML5 explains links, which is what connects pages into a website.
5. Semantic HTML, lists and tables. HTML Semantic Tags (23 minutes, the longest video) teaches the HTML5 tags that describe the meaning of each part of a page. HTML Lists & Tables Explained closes the course with two of the most common ways to organise information.
How the course is organised
The course has 11 videos and runs for about 1.7 hours in total.
- Course introduction (4 minutes): what you will build and learn.
- Getting started (about 10 minutes): what HTML is, the tools, and your first document.
- Core markup (about 19 minutes): tags, elements, attributes, page structure and the head section.
- Building real pages (about 54 minutes): body content, hyperlinks and semantic tags.
- Organising information (13 minutes): lists and tables.
Short videos come first so you get results fast, and the longer lessons come once you are comfortable. This is a classic course made of video lessons only, so you practise by typing the examples yourself as you watch.
How to study it step by step
- Watch the introduction and set up your tools. Follow Tools Required To Write HTML Code and make sure you can open an HTML file in your browser.
- Build your first document with the video. Pause Create Your First HTML Document often and type every line yourself rather than copying.
- Make a small cheat sheet. After HTML Tags Elements Attributes and Master HTML Page Structure, write the page skeleton from memory on paper, then check it against the video.
- Explore the head section. While watching HTML Head Section Internals, add each item to your own page and reload it to see what changes.
- Build a mini project. Use the body content and hyperlinks lessons to make a two-page personal site: a home page and an about page, linked to each other.
- Rewrite it with semantic tags. After HTML Semantic Tags, go back to your mini site and replace generic containers with the right semantic tags.
- Add a list and a table. Finish with HTML Lists & Tables Explained and add, for example, a list of your skills and a table of your weekly timetable.
At one or two videos a day, you can finish in about a week with a small site of your own to show for it.
What to learn next
HTML gives a page its structure; styling and behaviour come next. Good follow-ups on Skills Pragati are Learn CSS From Scratch to style the pages you build, and Learn JSON Step By Step for the data format you will meet as soon as you work with web apps. Come back to the HTML5 course page whenever you need to revisit a lesson.
