The AI Filmmaking Foundational Course is a free, beginner-level video course that teaches you how to turn an idea into a finished AI-generated film. It is for creators, marketers, educators, storytellers and new filmmakers who want to learn the craft of cinema and the AI workflow together, ending with your own 60-second short film.

The course runs to 14 videos and about 9.2 hours on YouTube. Instead of jumping straight into tools, it teaches the film language that makes AI shots look intentional: shot types, framing, camera movement, light, colour and lens choices. Then it moves on to the hard problems of AI video, such as keeping a character and a location consistent from shot to shot. You can see the full outline on the AI Filmmaking course page.

Who this course is for

  • Complete beginners who have never made a film and want a clear, step-by-step starting point.
  • Content creators and YouTubers who want cinematic shorts, trailers or explainers without a camera crew.
  • Marketers and educators who need short videos for campaigns or lessons.
  • Storytellers and writers who want to see their stories on screen.

The level is Beginner. No film school background is needed. The first video walks you through the essential tools, the interface and the overall workflow before any creative module starts.

What you will learn

The 14 videos fall into six clear themes.

1. Tools and workflow. “From Zero to AI Filmmaker: Essential Tools, Interface & Workflow Masterclass” sets up the pipeline you will use for the rest of the course. Getting the workflow right first saves hours of rework later.

2. Visual storytelling and characters. Module 1, “Unleash Visual Storytelling Mastery”, and Module 2, “Crafting Unforgettable AI Characters with Consistency”, cover how a story is told in pictures and how to keep the same character recognisable across many generated shots. Character consistency is one of the main things that separates a real AI film from a pile of random clips.

3. Film language: shots, framing and movement. Module 3 (shot types), Module 4 (dynamic camera movement) and Module 5 (composition and framing) give you the vocabulary to ask for exactly the shot you want. Module 4 alone is about 75 minutes, so expect to spend real time here.

4. Look and style. Module 6, “Illuminate Your Film with Light, Color & Lens Effects”, and Module 7, “Unleash Stunning Visual Styles for AI Films”, show how light, colour, lenses and visual style set the mood of a scene. Module 6 is one of the two longest videos, at about 86 minutes.

5. Emotion, locations and advanced prompts. Module 8 covers emotion and character depth, Module 10 covers location consistency, and Module 11 covers advanced prompt engineering for films. These modules turn good-looking shots into scenes that feel connected and believable.

6. Post-production, audio and the final film. Module 9, “Master Post-Production Magic” (about 86 minutes), and Module 12, “Mastering Audio Production for AI Filmmaking”, cover editing, voice, sound and finishing. Module 13, “Create Your 60-Second AI Short Film Masterpiece”, brings everything together into one short film.

How the course is organised

  • 14 videos, about 9.2 hours in total.
  • One tools-and-workflow video, then Modules 1 to 13.
  • The final project is the 60-second short film in Module 13.

One practical note: the YouTube playlist lists the videos newest first, so Module 13 appears at the top and the tools video at the bottom. For learning, follow the module numbers instead: start with the tools video, then Module 1, Module 2 and so on up to Module 13. The video shown on this page is Module 13, which is a good preview of where you will end up.

How to study it step by step

  1. Watch Module 13 briefly first (the video on this page) to see the goal: a complete 60-second AI short film.
  2. Set up your tools with “From Zero to AI Filmmaker”. Follow along and get the same workflow working on your own machine.
  3. Learn the story and character basics in Modules 1 and 2. Write a one-paragraph story idea and design one main character you will reuse.
  4. Practise the film language in Modules 3, 4 and 5. For each shot type and camera move, generate one test shot of your own character.
  5. Build your look with Modules 6 and 7. Pick one lighting style and one visual style and keep them for the whole film.
  6. Make it feel real with Modules 8, 10 and 11: add emotion, lock down your locations and refine your prompts.
  7. Finish in post with Modules 9 and 12: edit your shots, add voice and sound.
  8. Make your film with Module 13. Keep it to 60 seconds; a short, complete film teaches more than a long, unfinished one.

Short daily sessions work well. The longer modules (4, 6, 7 and 9) are easier to absorb in two or three sittings, with practice in between. The whole course is also available as a YouTube playlist.

If you enjoy the image side of the work, the AI Art Step By Step With Midjourney course goes deeper into prompt structure, models, seeds and blending images, which pairs well with this course.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI Filmmaking course free?

Yes. All 14 videos are free to watch on YouTube, and you can follow them from the course page or the playlist.

How long does the course take?

The videos add up to about 9.2 hours. If you practise each module as you go, plan for a few weeks of short sessions, with extra time for the longer modules on camera movement, lighting, visual styles and post-production.

Do I need filmmaking experience?

No. The course is at Beginner level. It starts with the tools, the interface and the workflow, then teaches shot types, framing and camera movement before the advanced modules.

What will I have made by the end?

Module 13 guides you to create a 60-second AI short film. By then you will have practised character and location consistency, lighting and style, editing and audio, so the final film uses everything from the earlier modules.
